Ocala Lawn Care Services

Ocala Lawn Care Services The long growing season, warm humid climate, and the great amount of maintenance included in lawn care have made Ocala, FL a hot spot for lawn care companies. When it comes to Ocala lawn care, potential customers will in no way be limited in their options when it comes to lawn care providers. There truly is a lawn care for everyone!

All lawn cares are not the same. There are all different kinds of lawn cares. Lawn care companies vary in size, quality, and specialization. All types of lawn cares have their own unique benefits. The lawn care run by the high school kid may have the best rates in town, while the larger full time lawn care company has the best quality and stability. Some lawn cares provide full service maintenance and others choose to specialize in one area of lawn care (i.e. pest control).

When choosing a lawn care service, it is important to consider your unique lawn care needs and wants. Does your property require just mowing or does it need someone that can devote attention to flower beds, trimming, and other full service options? What level of lawn care service are you looking for? Will the lawn care service provided by someone looking for quick spending money be satisfactory or do you need trained professionals?

It is also a good idea to look into the ability of the lawn care service. Equipment, manpower, and knowledge are all important aspects to consider. Hiring a lawn care service that doesn’t have the proper resources, can end up costing you in the long run. Make sure to inquire about insurance coverage; including workers compensation. You can be held liable for even self inflicted accidents caused by uninsured lawn care services.

If you are in the market for a lawn care service; do your research, take your time, and find the best lawn care for you. You will be much better off in the long run! It’s not worth it to go through multiplelawn cares before you find the right one.

Ocala Azaleas

Ocala Azaleas Largely popular for their beautiful display of Spring blooms, Azaleas are a favorite of many gardeners. It is almost impossible not to notice them around Ocala this time of year! Most often planted in groups, the compact, bright, colorful blooms are truly a sight to behold!

Azaleas are fairly easy to care for once established. Azaleas are members of a group called “Ericaceous” plants. This is a group of plants known for their acid loving tendencies. They perform extremely well in moist, organic soils with somewhat low pH level of 4.5 to 5.5. This is often why you can find beautiful Azaleas under Live Oaks. Not only do the leaves provide acidity to the soil, but Azaleas also tend to do well when planted in areas out of direct sunlight.

If you are considering planting Azaleas, adding peat moss to the soil will increase the organic content and raise the acidity. You can also use compost and manure. You will want to fertilize your Azaleas well for maximum color and blooms. Blooms grow on the seasons new growth, so refrain from pruning them after mid summer. Doing so may hinder the buds from setting. Azaleas are cold hardy, so you will not have to worry about protecting them during the mild winter months of Ocala, FL.

Ocala Leaf Clean Up???

Ocala Leaf Clean Up??? It is a fall tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation. We all enjoy the changing of the season as summer gives way to fall, but with it comes leaves. Lots and lots of them!

While some claim to enjoy the exercise of raking, I have never particularly enjoyed the chore. So, I was more than happy to learn of some alternatives, of which I would like to share with you!

It is common thinking that not raking and collecting leaves from your lawn will damage it by suffocation or lack of sunlight. This is normally not the case. By the time leaves start to fall, your lawn will already have gone dormant. In fact at Michigan State, researchers found that letting leaves decompose back into the lawn made for a healthier lawn next spring! One of the best ways to do this is to mulch up leaves with your lawn mower. This will speed up the process and keep your lawn somewhat free of leaves.

Ocala Leaf Clean Up??? Another option is to use leaves as mulch. It can be very valuable to use some of the more compact leave varieties for this purpose. Leaves have many organic nutrients that will improve soil conditions for your plants. A leaf mulch is also extremely useful for retaining soil moisture. Leaves are sometimes thought to harbor disease and insects harmful to plants, but I have never found this to be a problem.

If you do decide to rake, consider composting! The nutritional value will add considerably to the health of your soil, while cutting down on waste. Leaves often prove to be a very large problem for local landfills and can be a considerable cost to tax payers.

This year take it easier on your self and return those leaves to your lawn! The organic matter and nutrients will provide your lawn an extra boost that will make for a healthier, more beautiful lawn in the spring!

The Best Grass For Ocala, Fl Lawns

The Best Grass For Ocala, Fl Lawns

When choosing the grass for your lawn it is important to consider which varieties will be best for your property. Installing a lawn is a large investment of time and resource. This article will help you with some of the pros and cons of the different options.

Zoysia: Zoysia makes a beautiful summer lawn. It is known for growing an attractive green lawn free of weeds. It is also a drought tolerant grass when established. One of the unique aspects of this grass is its golden brown color during dormancy. It is an aggressive grower establishing a thick lawn, but can also be hard to contain. Its low profile and slow growth rate allow it to be mowed much less than other varieties.

Centipede: Centipede is like Zoysia in that it is a low growing grass needing fewer mowings. Centipede can be mowed every 14 days instead of every week as with other lawns. It is not nearly as aggressive as the Zoysia, but is still able to establish a nice lawn. Centipede does quite well with drought, seeing its compact growing habit. It prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade. Centipede usually stays green year round and is well adapted to the sandy soil of Ocala, Fl.

Bermuda: Is found throughout Florida. It has good drought tolerance, but doesn’t perform well on sandy soil. Bermuda prefers the heavier soils. This grass is the primary choice for sport fields. Golf courses and many other sport/athletic fields across Florida implement its use.

St. Augustine: Is one of the few varieties that can’t be seeded. It is available in sprigs, plugs, and sod. It is one of the best varieties for shade tolerance. In the past this grass has been very susceptible to insect and disease, but has been very much improved with newer varieties. One reason Floridians are moving away from this grass, is it doesn’t tolerate drought well and often dies without supplemental water.

Bahia – Argentine: Is the most popular grass in Florida, closely rivaled by St. Augustine. The biggest complaint with this grass is its seed heads. During the fast growing months of summer, the seed heads can require frequent mowing. It is excellent for houses without irrigation systems, as it is the best for drought tolerance. It will brown during longer droughts, but green very quickly with new rain fall.

This is just a list of the most popular grasses used in the Ocala, Fl area. There are many other varieties, but this will get you started in the right direction. If you would like more information, you can contact a local landscape company or supplier. This can be very helpful as there are different types inside the varieties. For instance, some types of St. Augustine are more shade tolerant than others. A landscaper will be able to evaluate your specific situation and make recommendations.

The reason for the wide difference in price can be attributed to many things; including: the size of the lawn, location, complexity, efficiency of the company, services desired, Etc. Lawn care services generally provide a basic lawn care service package along with a full service option. The basic lawn care service package will include: mowing, weed eating, edging, and blowing. What to do with lawn care / grass clippings

What to do with lawn care / grass clippings Many people think that bagging grass clippings is good for your lawn. But, when you take a closer look at just what those clippings contain, you will see that bagging them may be depriving your lawn of key nutrients!

The grass clipping is made up of 80% water. By mulching your grass clippings and returning them to your lawn, you can add additional moisture to your lawn. This would allow you to irrigate less and conserve water. This can be especially helpful to your lawn during the scorching summer heat of Ocala, FL summers. Not only is the grass clipping made up of mostly water, but it is also 5% nitrogen. This is one of the main ingredients in fertilizer! When you allow the grass clippings to return to the lawn and decompose naturally, you will also be contributing to the natural balance of organisms that provide the foundation for healthy growing conditions.

So next time you mow your lawn, remember to let all those good nutrients return from where they came from and replenish your lawn. Your lawn will appreciate it and you won’t have to deal with the added work of removing and disposing of all those grass clippings!

How To Choose The Lawn Care That Works For You

How To Choose The Lawn Care That Works For You Mowing and maintaining your lawn can be a monstrous task. The high humidity, frequent rain storms, and fast growth rate all contribute to a lot of maintenance needs in your yard. When looking for a lawn care service, a great place to start is by asking your friends, family, and neighbors about their experience with local lawn cares. Many times their reviews of local lawn services can help you determine quality companies that have established good reputations in your area. If you are new to the area, your best bet for finding quality lawn care is online reviews of local companies. Once you have a list of reviews for several lawn services, you will want to contact at least three different companies to come out and give you a free estimate. It is best to get a good mix of larger and smaller lawn care companies.

How To Choose The Lawn Care That Works For You Be sure that all companies are including the same services in their proposal. Don’t be afraid to ask for only the services you want. Ask if a yearly contract is required, if work is guaranteed, and how you will be charged. Some lawn services charge per cut and others by the month. If you are interested in prepaying, many companies will be willing to provide you a substantial discount. Just make sure it is a reputable company.

How And When To Prune Crape Myrtles In Ocala, FL

How And When To Prune Crape Myrtles In Ocala, FL Few flowering plants are as loved as the crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica, USDA Hardiness Zones 7–9). It is a largely popular plant in the Ocala, FL area as it thrives in heat, humidity, and is a trooper in drought. While many people incorporate the plant into their landscapes, it is probably one of the most misunderstood when it comes to how and when to prune it. So much so that the landscape industry has gone so far as to call it “Crape-murder”. It is my goal today to clear up some of these myths and misunderstandings.

How And When To Prune Crape Myrtles In Ocala, FL To start off with, it is a common myth that if you don’t prune a Crape Myrtle it will not bloom the next year. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, improper pruning can actually decrease blooms! It is better to not prune them at all than to prune them in an improper fashion. Some of the effects of improper pruning can include: reduced number of blooms, unsupported blooms/broken branches, and encouraged disease and insect infestations.

When you prune your Crape Myrtle, the goal is to accomplish a graceful structure with strong upright branches. This will provide you with a much more healthy tree, as well as give you the benefit of earlier blooms in much larger quantities. It is also much more appealing to the eye throughout the Winter months.

How And When To Prune Crape Myrtles In Ocala, FL The way in which you prune depends on the type of plant you have. If you have the tree-form prune as follows:

  1. Be sure to completely remove all sucker shoots and sprouts at soil level and along the trunk.
  2. Completely prune all limbs that grow horizontally in the crown of the tree. This will give your tree better form and make room for the stronger branches.
  3. Prune back remaining branches to the place where they are one-half to one-fourth inch in diameter. This will result in a nice symmetrical form, ready for next years blooms.

If you have a shrub-type, it will be a little less work. You can, for the most part, shape it as you would any other shrub. The Crape Myrtle grows very fast in the summer, so you will want to trim back at least a foot or two to make room for new growth.

Unless you are trying to get a second round of blooms during the year, Crape Myrtles should be pruned around February. If you do decide to go for a second round, you can encourage the second blossoms by pruning the first as soon as they begin to fade. This is a technique called deadheading. Just don’t try it after August, as this would be to close to winter.
